Here are some quick tips for patients with scalp psoriasis:
Try using a scale softener. A scale softener that contains salicylic acid or an oil-based product like coconut oil or Baker's P&S can soften the thick, stubborn patches of psoriasis. Softening these patches also allows medicine that you apply to psoriasis to work better. When applying medication to your scalp, be sure to lift your hair out of the way. This helps ensure that you use the medicine on your scalp and not your hair.
Remove scale with care. To treat scalp psoriasis, you need to loosen and remove the scale on your scalp. It would be best if you did this gently. Picking can cause psoriasis to flare and can cause hair loss
Try not to scratch! As hard as it is, try not to scratch when your scalp it itchy! Scratching traumatizes the scalp, making your psoriasis worse. Scratching can cause the scalp to bleed and lead to hair loss
Shampoo gently. Rubbing a shampoo into the scalp may seem best and may also relieve your itch, but it can cause more damage. Rubbing, scrubbing, and scratching your scalp tend to make scalp psoriasis worse. Gently massage your shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips and try to avoid your nails touching the skin.
Try not to stress out. A psoriasis flare-up can be stressful. Feeling stressed, however, can make matters worse. Stress can worsen psoriasis and lead to hair loss. While easier said than done, finding ways to unwind can do wonders for your skin!
